Без розуміння того, що таке час, які його види вирізняють, не можна розібратися в наших очікуваннях щодо майбутнього. Тому першою чергою у статті йдеться про час як специфічне явище, про уявлення про майбутній час, а також розглядаються особливості майбутнього соціального часу, зокрема майбутнього в майбутньому, майбутнього в сьогоденні та майбутнього в минулому. Уявлення того, що буде попереду, набувають форм образів майбутнього. Проаналізовано, які бувають образи майбутнього за рівнем достовірності, за узагальненим змістом можливих подій, за часовим горизонтом. Розглянуто принципові відмінності між образами далекого та близького майбутнього. Показано, що головними елементами образів далекого майбутнього є уяви, а образів близького майбутнього — очікування.
