Стаття має на меті аналіз концептуальних напрацювань західної соціології з питань дорослості та висновки щодо їхніх евристичних можливостей та обмежень для сучасного суспільства.

У соціології вікові категорії (чи етапи життєвого циклу) розглядають як соціальні конструкції, змінювані під впливом суспільних процесів. Ці категорії, такі як дитинство, молодість чи дорослість, є динамічними та нестійкими, а їх соціальне конструювання відбувається безперервно, особливо пришвидшено в умовах пізнього модерну. Зміна соціальних очікувань щодо дорослості відображає мінливість суспільних норм та інституційних умов, а традиційні маркери дорослості перестають бути релевантними.

Попри давні заклики щодо необхідності теоретичного осмислення дорослості та переходу до неї, її концептуалізація залишається недостатньою. У статті аналізуються сучасні підходи до соціологічного розуміння дорослості, зокрема концепції, що пояснюють її зміну за умов пізнього модерну.

Окрему увагу приділено концепції «емерджентної дорослості» Дж. Арнета, яка трактує період ранньої молодості як самостійну стадію життєвого шляху. Детально розглянуто концепцію «затриманої дорослості» Дж. Коте та його ідею про два типи індивідуалізації, а також проаналізовано можливість застосування його гуманістичного підходу до розуміння дорослості. У статті викладено аналіз праць Дж. Твенґе, яка пов’язує уповільнення дорослішання сучасних поколінь із впливом цифрових технологій та змінами у вихованні, а також аналіз зв’язку соціальних показників із показниками психічного стану. Розглянуто соціологічний підхід Г. Блатерера, який трактує дорослість крізь призму соціального визнання та змін у структурах суспільства, наголошуючи на гнучкості сучасних соціальних ролей і нестабільності дорослої ідентичності.

У підсумку зазначається, що дорослість більше не є чітко визначеним етапом життя, а її концептуальні межі залишаються рухомими. Зроблено висновок про необхідність подальших досліджень, які враховують історичний контекст уявлень про дорослість, інституційні трансформації та економічні реалії, що впливають на можливості набуття дорослого статусу.
